The phrase “intellectual disability” can feel heavy. But behind the label is something far simpler and more human: it describes people who learn, understand, and process information a little differently, and who need extra support in certain areas of everyday life.
Intellectual disability is a condition that develops before, during, or soon after birth, and it shows up as differences in two main areas:
- Intellectual functioning: This is seen in things like learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and understanding abstract ideas.
- Adaptive behavior: This is seen in practical, everyday skills like communication, self-care, and navigating social situations.

What causes it?
